Malo E lelei readers and welcome back to my blog! Today's task in Rm9 was to learn about a research writing, my topic I've chose was my own culture which is.... Tonga 🇹🇴! Our WALT : Reaserching other cultures!
History of Tonga : In the 12th century Tongans had a Tui’i O Tonga (Chief of Tonga). Around the 16th century European explorers had arrived such as Abel Tamasan (who visited Tongatapu & Ha’apai) in 1643. Soon After in 1845 a young tongn warrior named Taufa’ahau united tonga into a kingdom, later on he was baptised from these methodist minsorasies and changed his names to Siaosi. He was the first king of tonga named King Sioasi Tupou 1. During the 19th century the british people arrived in tonga with an agreement which is known as the treaty of friendship. After a few years the treaty ended in 1970 under the arrangement of Queen Salote before her death in 1965 and that is how Tonga became its own governor country and that is how the Pacific is very unique.
Tradition Tongan things : Kava is like anchol that they drink at night at a fale kalapu (Kava club), which they also call faikava (To drink Kava). Only mens are allowed to do kava and the women are those who serve it, but women's possitison be unmarried or it's a young woman which they like to call a tou'a. In some of the outer islands of Tonga, kava is drunk almost every night, but on the main island of Tongatapu, it is usually drunk only on Wednesday and Saturday nights. With the introduction of television, rugby is usually watched by the kava drinkers, and the songs are sung in the commercial breaks.
Tau'olunga is what girls do on special occasions such as weddings & birthdays etc. During the girls Tau'olunga family members come around with lots of money and start to fakapale her, sometimes they like to join the girls to tu'uafale to make sure the girls are feeling comfortable. The girls have to always smile, it is always important to tauaalo in every single movement of the tau'olunga.
